Homemade Bagels
The easiest bagel recipe. Simple Sunday baking.
Ingredients
- active dry yeast
- warm water
- sugar
- all-purpose flour
- salt
- olive oil
- egg
- cheddar cheese
- jalapeños
- everything bagel seasoning
Method
- 1
In a measuring cup or bowl, combine 1.5 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 packet of active dry yeast. Mix well and let it sit for 10 minutes until a foamy layer forms on top.
- 2
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 tablespoon of salt.
- 3
Pour the activated yeast mixture into the flour.
- 4
Using the dough hook attachment, knead the dough in the stand mixer for about 10 minutes until it forms a cohesive ball.
- 5
Turn the dough out onto a work surface and knead by hand for a few more minutes until it's a smooth ball.
- 6
Lightly coat a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough ball in the bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rest for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- 7
After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
- 8
Turn the dough out onto a cutting board, reshape it into a ball, and cut it into 8 equal pieces.
- 9
Roll each piece into a small ball. Then, poke a hole through the center with your fingers and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
- 10
Place the shaped bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
- 11
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully place the bagels into the boiling water, boiling for 1 minute on the first side.
- 12
Flip the bagels and boil for an additional 30 seconds on the other side.
- 13
Using a slotted spoon or spatula, remove the bagels from the water and place them back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- 14
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 15
Brush the tops of the bagels with an egg wash.
- 16
Add your desired toppings, such as shredded cheddar cheese, sliced jalapeños, everything bagel seasoning, or leave them plain.
- 17
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 18
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
