The Best Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
Here is the recipe for delicious homemade cinnamon rolls, complete with a cinnamon-sugar filling and a rich cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients
- water
- active dry yeast
- sugar
- all-purpose flour
- sugar
- kosher salt
- egg
- egg yolk
- unsalted butter
- unsalted butter
- ground nutmeg
- ground cloves
- ground cinnamon
- brown sugar
- cream cheese
- unsalted butter
- vanilla extract
- powdered sugar
- heavy whipping cream
Method
- 1
In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, active dry yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir briefly, then cover the bowl with a towel and set it aside for about 10 minutes to allow the yeast to bloom and become foamy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, and kosher salt.
- 3
In a separate small bowl, whisk together one whole egg and one egg yolk. Add the egg mixture, the melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
- 4
Mix all the ingredients with your hands until a shaggy dough forms.
- 5
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- 6
Lightly flour a clean bowl. Form the dough into a ball, place it in the bowl, and cover. Let it rise in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- 7
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a bowl, combine the room temperature butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Mix with a fork until well combined and forms a paste-like consistency.
- 8
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Place it on a lightly floured surface and use a rolling pin to roll it out into a large rectangle.
- 9
Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the surface of the rolled-out dough.
- 10
Tightly roll the dough into a log. Use unflavored dental floss or a sharp knife to cut the log into individual rolls.
- 11
Line a baking dish with parchment paper. Arrange the cut rolls in the dish, leaving some space between them. Cover and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
- 12
After the second rise, pour heavy whipping cream over and around the rolls in the baking dish. This will create a soft, gooey texture.
- 13
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown.
- 14
While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting. In a bowl, combine the cream cheese, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- 15
Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, allow them to cool slightly before generously spreading the cream cheese frosting over the top. Serve warm and enjoy.
