Homemade Chicken Gyro
A delicious homemade chicken gyro recipe featuring thinly sliced chicken marinated in a flavorful blend of spices, stacked on skewers, and roasted until perfectly cooked and browned.
Ingredients
- 1.5 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 count chicken breast (approximately 1 kg, sliced into thin fillets)
- 1 count onion, halved
- 120 ml olive oil
- 4 count wooden skewers
Method
- 1
In a small bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients: salt, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, ground coriander, chili powder, paprika, dried thyme, and dried oregano.
- 2
Mix with a spoon until all the spices are well combined.
- 3
In a large bowl, pour in the olive oil.
- 4
Add the prepared gyro seasoning to the olive oil and mix with a spatula until fully incorporated.
- 5
Add the thinly sliced chicken fillets to the marinade. Using your hands, ensure each piece of chicken is thoroughly coated.
- 6
Take half an onion and place it flat-side down on a baking sheet.
- 7
Pierce the onion half with four wooden skewers, standing them upright to create a base.
- 8
Thread the marinated chicken fillets onto the skewers one by one, stacking them to form a tower.
- 9
Place the other half of the onion on top of the chicken tower.
- 10
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and nicely browned on the outside.
- 11
Once cooked, let the chicken rest for a few minutes.
- 12
To serve, hold the gyro tower steady and use a sharp knife to shave thin slices of meat from top to bottom.
