A delicious homemade Chinese prawn toast recipe, perfect for a snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
- king prawns
- salt
- black pepper
- caster sugar
- light soy sauce
- garlic
- egg
- cornflour
- white bread
- white sesame seeds
- black sesame seeds
- vegetable oil
Method
- 1
Place the raw prawns on a cutting board and mince them into a fine paste using a cleaver or a large knife.
- 2
Transfer the prawn paste to a mixing bowl.
- 3
Season the paste with salt, black pepper, sugar, and light soy sauce.
- 4
Mince the garlic cloves and add them to the bowl.
- 5
Separate an egg. Add the egg white and cornflour to the prawn mixture. Reserve the egg yolk for later.
- 6
Mix all the ingredients in the bowl thoroughly until well combined into a thick paste.
- 7
Trim the crusts from the slices of white bread. Cut each slice into a square.
- 8
Spread a generous layer of the prawn paste mixture onto one slice of bread.
- 9
Place another slice of bread on top to form a sandwich.
- 10
Press the sandwich gently and neaten the edges with a knife, ensuring the filling is sealed inside.
- 11
In a shallow bowl or plate, whisk the reserved egg yolk.
- 12
On a separate plate, mix the white and black sesame seeds.
- 13
Dip each side of the prawn sandwich into the whisked egg yolk, coating it completely.
- 14
Press each side of the egg-coated sandwich into the sesame seed mixture to coat.
- 15
Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
- 16
Carefully place the prepared sandwiches into the hot oil.
- 17
Shallow fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
- 18
Once cooked, remove the prawn toast from the pan and place it on a plate lined with a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- 19
Cut the prawn toast in half diagonally to serve. Enjoy warm.
